ZANESVILLE, Ohio- 12 scholarships were given to current or future college students by the American Legion Post 29.

The 12 scholarships are  for a thousand dollars each. Graeme Benson was one of the scholarship recipients.  His connection to the American

Legion is through his Grandfather who served in the Navy during World War II. Benson is a student at Cedarville University.

“Cedarville is a pretty expensive private school, said Benson. “I’m in the military so that helps a lot, but the National Guard doesn’t cover private schools fully. So I need a lot of help from other places to support me. Thanks to the Legion I’m one paycheck closer. It’s money I don’t have to spend on food or gas. It helps me out a lot.”

Chairman of the scholarship committee, Larry Wheeler, says eight of the scholarship recipients are renewals and four are new winners.

“There’s three of us who get together and look at the applications,” said Wheeler. “Grades are certainly a requirement. We also look at what they are going into. We think they can help Veterans somewhere down the road.”

All of the scholarships winners are from the local area.
