Dennis Dettra

Dennis Clay Dettra, 74, of Chaseville, died Tuesday (August 25, 2026) at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.

He was born January 8, 1952, in Senecaville, son of Edwin M. Dettra and Earline (Barnett) Dettra.

Dennis was a 1970 graduate of Meadowbrook High School and a graduate of Ohio University, where he had earned both his Bachelor’s degree and later his Master’s degree.

Dennis devoted much of his life to education and serving his community. Over the years, he worked as a superintendent, principal and teacher, as well as owning and operating several area businesses. He also served on the Rolling Hills Local School Board and worked with the Juvenile Court, where he was dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of troubled youth.

Dennis had a love for many things, especially horses, traveling, following the Cincinnati Reds and Ohio State Buckeyes, and working around the farm. Above all, he cherished the time he spent with his family and grandchildren.

He was a member of the Quaker City Masonic Lodge # 500 F. & A.M., where he had served as Past Master.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers: Jerry, Lanny, and Scott Dettra.

Dennis is survived by his partner, Laurie DeVolld; his son, Devvon, and Mindy Dettra; his daughter, Rachell, and Christian Dodd; and his grandchildren: Jestin Martin (age 19), Brennan Dettra (age 13), Elliot Dettra (age 10), and Tristan Dettra (age 7); his three sisters-in-law: Peggy Jo, Lisa, and Susan Dettra; several nieces & nephews; and his dog Caesar.

Dennis will be remembered for his dedication to education and his community, his love of history and the outdoors, and most importantly, the lasting impact he had on his family and the many young people whose lives he touched.

Visitation will be held Thursday (August 27, 2026) from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Black-Epperson Funeral Home, Byesville, where funeral services will be held Friday (August 28, 2026) at 11 a.m. with Evan. Woody Biggs officiating.

Burial will be at Senecaville Cemetery.
