Zanesville Farmers Market Celebrates 50 Years of Connecting Local Vendors With the Community
Interviewed by WHIZ reporter Gabe Hutton

The Zanesville Farmers Market is celebrating a major milestone: 50 years of bringing local vendors and the community together. The anniversary was marked with another busy Saturday morning at the market, where vendors welcomed longtime customers and new visitors. For five decades, the farmers market has provided a place for local vendors to sell their products while giving residents an opportunity to support businesses and producers close to home. Some vendors have been part of the market for more than 10 years, while others have connections that go back nearly to the market’s beginning.
“It’s been very exciting. I’m just a few months in this position, but it’s been a lot of fun just learning from everyone over the last few months,” said Market Manager Michelle Illing. “And, you know, it’s the golden one. So it’s exciting to be here.”
Illing said the 50th anniversary has also been an opportunity to hear from longtime vendors and customers about what the market means to them.
“Some of our vendors have been here since the beginning,” Illing said. “A lot of customers have come up today and said that they’re really thankful we’re here. And congratulations. So it’s been great to hear.”
For many residents in Zanesville and the surrounding area, visiting the farmers market has become a Saturday morning tradition. Repeat customers continue to return to their favorite vendors, creating relationships that go beyond simply buying products. Illing described the atmosphere at the market as being similar to a family, with vendors and customers supporting one another.
“Yeah, it’s like a family here. Everyone really supports each other,” Illing said. “Some people have those loyal customers that are coming directly for just that one booth.”
The market also gives shoppers the opportunity to purchase products made directly by the vendors themselves. Illing said that personal connection is an important part of what makes the farmers market special. “Everything here is made by the vendor,” she said. “They have used their hard work, their hands, to get the products here, and it’s just supporting local and giving back to your community.”
After 50 years, the Zanesville Farmers Market continues to serve as a gathering place for local vendors and the community, with longtime traditions and relationships helping carry the market into the future.
