Salute to Veterans at Secrest Auditorium

Veterans

ZANESVILLE, Ohio- Local students crowded Secrest Auditorium today to learn about history and honor the men and women that serve our country.

Home schooled students joined kids from fifth grade classes in Muskingum County to learn more about the Armed Forces. The students heard from a speaker in the Air Force National Guard, answered history based questions, and received awards for a special project they participated in.

“By inviting them to contribute a piece of art or an essay describing how they would thank or celebrate their veterans; in which they did,” said Heidi Williams one of the organizers of the event. “We had a wonderful response from the students in our community. Good support from their teachers and from their families.”

Many members of the community came together to make the program a success. The Daughter’s of the American Revolution helped organize the day and the Tri-Valley Drum Corp performed as well as others.

“We had the color guard and honor guard to present our flags and to do our salute at the end of the program. We were blessed to have the John Glenn and the Zanesville High School Choirs contribute beautiful choir pieces for us today.”

The students submitted over 160 pieces of artwork and essays for the contest. Their work will be on display at the John McIntire Library through the entire month.
