Explore Zanesville’s Haunted History

ZANESVILLE, OH – October is here and Muskingum County History is getting ready for a night of ghost stories.
On Saturday, October 10th, there will be the Ghostly Stories Walking Tour and Investigation beginning at 8PM outside of the Stone Academy Museum, located at 115 Jefferson St.
Carrie Forgacs, the Operations Manager with Muskingum County History, says the tour will go throughout the historic, and haunted, Putnam District and wrap up back at the Stone Academy where the brave ghost hunters get to lock down for the night.
“At the end of the walk, which will be about 45 minutes to an hour, we will be locking down in the historic Stone Academy, the 1809 building that was built to be our state capital but didn’t get it.” Forgacs said. “So it became an abolitionists meeting space, a school, churches, and different, various uses over the years. Finally in the 1840’s, becoming a residence so there we have spectral foot steps, lights turning on and off, doors opening and closing along with even some voices that have been heard over the years, shadow figures being captured.”
Forgacs says if you have your own equipment like an EMF reader, spirit box, or recorder to bring it and see what you’re able to capture.
She says this will be a time to not only hear about the spooky side of Zanesville but also a time to hear about some of the major roles this area played all those years ago.
“We have a lot of historic spooky stories in Zanesville, but with it being spooky season and also bringing the history twist in, of walking through the building and sharing the actual historical fact that surround the stories or the people that we might come in contact with, it brings a new perspective to the history of the Putnam District and Muskingum County as a whole.” Forgacs said.
The Ghostly Stories Walking Tour and Investigation will take place from 8PM until Midnight on October 10th.
