Frozen Muskingum River: Update

The Ellis Dam and the frozen Muskingum River are still being monitored by Muskingum Emergency Management.
An Ice Jam north of Stockport is causing localized flooding to the north. This includes areas along County Rd, State Route 376, Hanwood, and Cottonwood. People living in that area that are affected by normal river flooding should consider evacuating as water rises. Ice Jam flooding is not as predictable as normal river flooding. Ohio Department of Natural Resources is working along with Muskingum Emergency Management, but this flooding might just have to run its natural course as there is little that can be done to prevent the flooding.
Director of Muskingum Emergency Management Jeff Jadwin said the Ice Jam starts at Terrace Shore and goes back towards Dresden. He said there were a few people evacuated from their homes. He said the ice doesn’t melt right away, so it will take time for the river to unfreeze. The water levels are still high so, Ellis Dam still cannot be seen at this time. If you need assistance evacuating call 911.
