Shortage of shovels and winter supplies

ZANESVILLE, Ohio- The search for shovels is on as, local hardware stores are struggling to remain stocked with winter supplies.

Wednesday we spoke to Dennis Baldwin, Store Manager of the Sunrise Do It Center about the shortage of shovels and ice melt in the city of Zanesville.

“Shovel wise we’re completely out. Salt and ice melt, we still have a small amount and we should have a shipment of shovels coming in on Friday. This has happened before but it’s rare. It’s just this long cold snap and a lot of snow and it just used everything up. Usually, you have a chance to bring your supplies back in,” said Baldwin.

Baldwin says the majority of customers that have come in lately are those who have been without winter supplies for quite some time.

“I would guess part of it is because we haven’t had any weather for the last couple of years, they may have misplaced them or may have broken them and thought ‘I’ll just get one next winter’ and didn’t need it for the last couple of years. Now, all of a sudden we’ve got a lot of snow and they need it. Either they don’t have one or haven’t replace it,” said Baldwin.

If you’re in need, The Sunrise Do It Center has a shipment of salt and shovels arriving this Friday. Baldwin also tells us if you run out of salt, you can use sand to cover the ice near you.
