County Treasurer offers new dropbox option to pay taxes

ZANESVILLE, Ohio- After receiving several complaints about business hours and accessibility, the county treasurer’s office developed a new plan to help residents easily pay their taxes.

The courthouse opens at 8:00 a.m., but the treasurer’s office doesn’t open until 8:30 a.m. Many citizens were frustrated with the difference in times so the treasurer came up with another option. County Treasurer Chris Hamill said, instead of waiting 30 minutes for the office to open up, now taxpayers can simply drop their payments off.

“It just makes it easier for the taxpayer to come into our office, or come into the courthouse lobby, and be able to drop their taxes in our door,” said Hamill. “Their canceled check is their receipt and we do post them that day once we receive them in the office.”

In addition to the new dropbox option, the treasurer’s office also has information for a program for those who have real estate and manufactured home taxes. Hamill said a letter was sent to those eligible for the program. The program allows participants to pay their taxes annually or semi-annually. Hamill said there is an ACH agreement enclosed in the letter that must be returned in order to begin the program for 2019.

“If you sign up for this agreement we will automatically withdraw from your checking or savings account and this will start for next years taxes. Just make sure you have enrolled in the program by December 4th of this year so we can set you up for that new ACH agreement.”

Hamill said participants must be current on their taxes and can’t have their taxes going through their bank through the escrow program.
