How to tackle ice this winter

ZANESVILLE, Ohio- As rain and snow showers fell overnight, ice has become a problem for many residents across Southeastern Ohio.

Dennis Baldwin, Manager of the Sunrise Do-It Center, explained the best ways to tackle ice and how snow shovels aren’t intended to be used on the ice.

“For the sidewalks, you want something with ice. You’re going to want something pretty heavy duty to scrape it. There are ice scrapers, you can actually use a narrow flat shovel which is a lot stronger than the snow shovel. The snow shovel isn’t really made for ice. If it’s really bad, you can put a little bit of ice melt or something down to loosen it up a little bit,” said Baldwin.

Now that snow showers have ended for the day, Baldwin shared ways to be proactive before the next time snowfall arrives.

“You could put down some ice melt which would finish melting what’s there and get it cleaned up. Then what residual product is left on the walk will help keep it from freezing over,” said Baldwin.

To purchase ice melt and other products to prepare for future storms, you can visit your local hardware store.
