ZPD holds swearing-in ceremony, officer receives promotion

ZANESVILLE, Ohio- The Zanesville Police Department is celebrating today after two officers are sworn in and another officer promoted.

Public Safety Director Fred Buck conducted the ceremony at City Hall. Officer Joseph Nelson and Officer Ryan Harris both took their oath to uphold the constitution of Ohio and to protect the streets of Zanesville. Officer Harris is no stranger to the department previously working for the force before taking some time to finish school. Buck said the men will be a great addition to the department.

“It’s not the easiest job in the world right now and I think everybody knows that. But it’s a very honorable job. And these guys will be there when you need them,” Buck said. “So it’s a tough job. Very tough job.”

In addition to the new officers, another officer was promoted from Patrolman to Sergeant. Sergeant Jarred Miracle has been with the department for eight years now. He took the test for promotion last year and was moved into the position after another Sergeant retired. Buck said the department is still hiring for anyone interested in working for ZPD.

“We’re giving a test Saturday. So it’s a constant thing. I think we have 30 on the list this time,” Buck shared. “It’s a pretty extensive background check, they do a polygraph, but for somebody that wants to get into this field this is a great time to do it. A lot of openings.”

Buck said the department offers training, but it helps if you already have training beforehand.
