Muskingum softball gets ready for OAC tournament

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Muskingum softball team has their eyes set on winning their first Ohio Athletic Conference tournament title since 2014.
After a 26-10 regular season and going 10-8 in conference play the Muskies snuck into the tournament as the four seed. They’ll go to Westerville on Friday to play in the double elimination OAC tournament.
Head coach Kari Winters said the OAC tournament is always a tough grind.
“Over the course of the year three of the top four teams, us, Ohio Northern, and Otterbein, have all received national votes. And Otterbein currently holds the 21 spot. It’s a dog fight everyday. You’ve got teams that finished tenth beating top ranked teams,” said Winters.
The Muskies will play Otterbein in their first game on Friday. The Cardinals swept Muskingum in their two regular season meetings.
It’s the Muskies first appearance in the OAC tournament since 2016 and junior outfielder Krissy Hughes said it was an exciting moment when they found out they were heading to the post season.
“Coach was standing at the front of the bus and she stood up and said ‘we made it into the OAC tournament.’ We all threw our hands up and she started running down the middle of the bus and was slapping our hands. We took our phones out and put it on Snapchat. It was a really cool moment,” said Hughes.
Muskingum’s first game is Friday at noon.
