ZANESVILLE, Ohio- An annual run honoring the life of lost too soon is coming to an end.

Grant Hickman was just 14 years old when he died in 2011. For the last seven years his parents have held a “Run 4 Grant” 5K race in his memory.

“Our son passed away unexpectedly and to remember him a friend suggested — he liked to run — so a friend suggested let’s have a run for him,” said Grant’s mother Beth Hickman. “It was started as a small run and it ended up being pretty big. So it’s just a way of remembering him and keeping his memory.”

The money raised from the race goes toward scholarships for high school seniors. This year the family gave out five $1,000 awards. Since the 5K started the family has awarded $58,000 in scholarships. Despite the help they’re able to provide, this years run is the last for the family.

“We’ve asked a lot of the community and the community has been very good to us. And it’s just, it’s time. It’s physically and emotionally stressful on us,” said Hickman. “And like I said, the community’s been very very good to us and it’s just time.”

Grant’s parents said they may do another run in the future. They said they are grateful to the community for the support they’ve received.
