Pet of the Week: 6-26-09

Summer is the perfect time to adopt a pet.

This week’s pet of the week is one of two puppies available at the Animal Shelter in Muskingum County.

“This is a little beagle mix puppy,” said Larry Hostetler of the Animal Shelter in Muskingum County. “He’s a male about 12 weeks old. His sister is there with him and he’s ready for adoption.”

Hostetler says when you adopt a dog, there are some things you should do to make the change easier on them.

“First of all you need to socialize the pets to different people and atmospheres,” he said. “Keep them home all and not allowing them around strangers tends to make them a little shy, so they need to be exposed to things.”

Hostetler also suggests crate training the dog, until they become more comfortable with their new surroundings.

He says, just like you would for children, you should make sure there are no electrical cords or other things around that are dangerous to the animal.
