Car Run into Pole, Sparks Fire

AEP is working to repair a power pole near the intersection of Spurk and Marietta Streets in Zanesville after a one-vehicle accident this afternoon.

It happened around 3:30 p.m.

Authorities say the driver of a white stratus had a vehicle malfunction, lost control of his vehicle, and slammed into an electric pole.

“It did shear that pole off. Apparently, the impact started some kind of fire in the engine compartment on the vehicle that was involved, ” says Zanesville Fire Department Chief, Dave Lacy.

Crews were initially concerned about the stability of the electric pole but deemed the scene safe.

Despite the impact, the driver was not transported to the hospital for any injuries.

“The occupant of the vehicle was able to get out on his own. He’s out here walking around on his own, ” says Lacy.

The Zanesville Police Department, the Zanesville Fire Department, and Community Ambulance responded to the scene.

Authorities say they are uncertain if the driver will be cited for the incident.

An AEP spokesman says no power outages resulted from the accident.
