Yard Sale to Benefit Huntington’s Disease Research

A local woman wants to raise money and bring awareness to a disease that affects her family.

Phyllis Shoemaker is having a second yard sale this Saturday at St. Luke Church to raise money for the research of Huntington’s disease. Shoemaker was astounded and humbled by the donations and support at her first yard sale in July.

Shoemaker says,”Well when I did the original yard sale the first part of July I was just overwhelmed by all the physical help and the items that were donated and the types of items that were donated for the yard sale I had at my home. “

She raised $1200 at July’s yard sale and is hoping to raise $800 more on Saturday. Shoemaker says she is so devoted to this cause after seeing what Huntington’s disease has done to her husband and son. The disease is degenerative and causes jerky body movements and psychological changes.

“My son being in a nursing home is a very difficult thing, but he is there and the realization is that is going to be his home and he is only 47 and that is why I have such a passion for research, for them to find a cure and treatment for this,” laments Shoemaker.

Items such as clothing, televisions and even computers will be on sale. The yard sale will run this Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at St. Luke Church on Pine Street in Zanesville.

Shoemaker also wanted to thank St. Luke Church and all the volunteers who worked tirelessly to help her with this event.
