Blog: 13 Week Check-Up
Thursday I went to my third doctor’s appointment for a check-up. I am currently 13 weeks pregnant.
I have gained exactly three pounds since my last appointment four weeks ago. Dr. Aepli says that I am currently on a healthy pace for weight gain. It amazes me that it was only three pounds though. At 13 weeks barely any of the pants I owned prior to my pregnancy fit! Honestly if they would have told me I gained 10 pounds I would not have been surprised!
The check-up was relatively short. Just a quick listen to the baby’s heart. Dr. Aepli says everything sounds good, which was a relief to me. I have a history of heart problems on both sides of my family and have always been very paranoid about heart issues. The doctor says they can actually do echocardiograms on fetuses to see if there are heart abnormalities. However, in my case he doesn’t believe it is needed, because my family’s heart issues are not largely due to genetic defects. In any case I hope the baby inherits J.K.’s heart!
I also told the doctor about an issue I had last week. I basically just tapped my tooth and it broke! Dr. Aepli says it’s early for me to be that calcium deficient, so it’s possible I may not have been getting enough calcium before I was pregnant. He recommends I drink calcium-fortified orange juice, because it will give me a variety of nutrients that I need. I’ll be doing a more in depth story on the issue in the next few weeks.
I already can’t wait until my next check-up. When you’re so early in the pregnancy the check-ups are reassuring so that you know everything is going okay. I think I’ll be a little more relieved once I can start to feel the baby move, but that’s still weeks away.
Tune in Friday at 6 p.m. for my next segment on pregnancy.
