Christmas Tree Recycling Program

Don’t throw away your Christmas tree just yet, the ODNR Division of Wildlife has another option for you.

The 2011 Christmas Tree Recycling Program is offering seven different drop off points where you can leave your tree.  Forest Research Specialist Clayton Rico says their main goal is to provide habitat for several species of wildlife including fish at Dow Lake.

"Taking those trees, the recycled trees, and putting them out on lakes when the lakes are frozen and then as that lake freezes, they are going to turn into wildlife structures for fish, so it is one of the good utilizations for the Christmas trees," said Rico.

Instead of throwing your tree away, Rico encourages the public to spread the word and inform the community to recycle their trees following the holidays.

"When you just throw your tree out, what happens is it ends up unfortunately in the landfills and it is taking up space that can be used for some other resource when it can be used for more of an environmental benefit for wildlife habitat," said Rico.

You have until January 21st to drop off your tree.
