Take to the Sky with Y-City Flying Service

Most people know Muskingum County is known for it’s attractions like the Y-bridge, the Longaberger Basket, and the Wilds…But  to see all that and more from a birds eye view? That’s exactly what the Y-City Flying Service is all about.

It’s a family owned and operated business with only about 8 families in Ohio operating an airport of its kind. The Norman family first started the business more than 40 year ago.

"People don’t believe you can own you’re own airport, which you can," said Flight Instructor Robert Norman. "Ours is unique as it is open to the public there are a lot of private airports where they have one in their back yard but they don’t have anybody coming in except people that are allowed but we’re actually open to the public."

Norman first began flying at age 11. Today he carries on the family tradition by providing flying lessons to those who want to get in the cockpit and take to the sky.

"I always wanted to fly, can’t think of a day I didn’t which is the unique part," said Norman. "Growing up I always wanted to fly and always had a career in mind and I think my dad was that way too."

The Norman family traces their flying history all the way back to the Wright Brothers. It was Robert’s granddad who learned from a man named Ralph Charles. Charles was taught by Bernard Whelan- who was a student of the Wright brothers.
