Two OUZ Students Awarded Scholarships
Two Ohio University Zanesville students are being awarded a scholarship in memory of a Frazeysburg Elementary School teacher.
Katelyn Grigsby and Shannon Francis are the winners of the 2011 Olaf Hanson Scholarship. On Friday, both students received $500 checks at the Muskingum County Community Foundation. Katelyn Grigsby is majoring in middle childhood education.
"It’s really nice to get help with books, tuition and Praxis exams, which are really expensive," said Grigsby. "All of these things add up so much – it’s just a blessing."
Applicants submitted a short essay and letters of recommendation from teachers to be considered for the scholarship. Shannon Francis is teaching at Maysville Local School District while pursuing a master’s degree in administration education.
"It’s an opportunity to go back to school, and even though a master’s isn’t required anymore, it’s definitely nice to go back and renew my education," said Francis.
About a dozen students applied this year, and friends of Olaf Hanson determine the winners.
