Tree of Love Lighting Ceremony

Holiday cheer spread with the flip of a switch in Zanesville on Friday night.

Genesis-Bethesda Hospital held its annual Tree of Love lighting ceremony.  Co-chairs Carol Kohler and Alice Mauk said the trees are given in honor or in memory of loved ones.

"What’s so neat is to see people drive around, because in front of each tree is a plaque, and they can find their tree for their loved one," said Mauk.

The centerpiece of the project is a larger tree decorated with hundreds of bulbs also donated by family and friends.  As part of the tradition, the crowd enjoyed Christmas music, and children visited Santa Claus.

"I can’t say that it’s not work, because it is, but when it all comes together, you see the faces of the people as they watch the kids and see the lights turn on, and to the people who purchase the trees, it really means a lot to them," said Kohler.

Trees and bulbs are still available.  To learn more about donating, you can call Genesis Volunteer Services at (740) 454-4700 or visit www.genesishcs.org.
