Blue Devils Get Tough Test;Bishops Remain Perfect
H.S. Boys Basketball:
New Philadelphia 34 Zanesville 52
After the loss to Newark Sunday, coach Scott Aronhalt and his staff challenged his kids to re-commit themselves to the basketball program. Goals were defined again, and some measures were taken to ensure that the Blue Devils were focused on getting better as a team, rather than as individuals.
The New Philadelphia Quakers (3-2, 2-1) were, unfortunately, the first team to face a rejuvinated Zanesville (4-2, 3-0) squad, as the Blue Devils looked like the bullies on the block from tip to finish. All of the things missing from the Newark game were present tonight: the physical toughness, the defensive intensity. It all added up to an 18 point win for the Devils, their first at home this season.
Jake Phillis, who was removed from the Newark game with an injured ankle, showed no signs of an injury tonight, going for a game high 14 points, on an efficient 5/7 shooting from the field. Marcus Johnson poured in a career-high 12 points, by far having his best night as a varsity member of the Blue Devils. Zanesville will look to stay perfect in league play Friday night, when they travel to Cambridge.
River View 38 Rosecrans 80
Rogge Gym hasn’t been inviting over the years and it was a house of horors for visiting River View. The Bishosps who used a 20 point night from Zak Kirkbride were able to get out and run early and kept their foot on the gas. Aaron Parry chipped in with 13 points while Jared Dalton had 11 for the Bishops who stayed perfect on the season. Jason Hammond and Michael Adams of River View each tallied nine in the lossing effort.
