Local Artist Donates Leather Artwork of Zanesville

A special event was held Thursday to unveil the newest exhibit at the Zanesville-Muskingum County Welcome Center.

Local artist Jaye Hayes donated his leather masterpiece entitled, "Zanesville: Histories and Humanities"
The work contains various Zanesville landmarks, from past and present, including the Marietta Street Fire Station, Muskingum County Courthouse, and Good Samaritan Hospital.
Hayes said he hopes to educate people about the history of Zanesville, and inspire other artists.

"Leather is not thought to be an artwork, but it’s just a good expression for drawing, for me. That’s why I’ve been doing this for about 40 years, hopefully other people will will say, hey well maybe I can do that," said Hayes

Hayes has been working with leather for over 40 years.
He said that donating his artwork to the city now felt like the right thing to do.

"It just seemed like the right thing, who knows why we do what we do, this was going to be a leave-behind to the community that i love, and that’s basically why it’s here now." added Hayes

The piece will remain on permanent display at the Welcome Center.
