New Year’s at the Nursing Home

New Year’s Day is a day off from work for many people, but healthcare is a 24/7 field.

Jamie Shannon assists residents with daily living activities at Emeritus Senior Living in Zanesville.  Shannon said she didn’t mind working on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day, because she enjoys celebrating the holidays with the people she cares for every day.

"It’s such a blessing to care for other people and to help people do things that they are no longer able to do for themselves, whether we do it for them or just provide some assistance, it’s very rewarding," said Shannon.  "It gives back to us as much as it gives to them."

Shannon said she planned to spend time with family after her shift ended.  She said the residents tend to show extra appreciation for their caregivers during the holiday season.

"Usually a smile is enough to know that I did good," said Shannon.  "We get thank you’s, hugs and kisses, and ‘I love you’.  They’re grateful for us."

Shannon said the residents remind her of her own grandparents, and she treats all of them like family.
