Dorothy Mae Barkley (April 3, 1923 – January 13, 2015)

ZANESVILLE
Dorothy M. Barkley, age 91, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, January 13, 2015. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Milton E. Barkley, her parents, John and Jessie Brunsink, and ten siblings. She is survived by five children, (Donald) Patricia (Doan) Garwood, (David) Peggy Gerhardt, David (Patricia) Barkley, (Donald) Rebecca Radcliff and Timothy (Shirley) Barkley. She was Grandma to 14 grandchildren and Golden Gram to 27 great-grandchildren. She is survived by special friends Carol Leach, Phil and Fay Walker, Patti Pethtel and Freda Dawson.
Dorothy spent her life in service to others. As pioneer missionaries, Milton and Dorothy started a church in Alaska before it was a state. They cleared the land and built a church and parsonage themselves out of the logs. Along the way they helped build a community, including the first school in Sterling, AK. Dorothy served with her husband as he pastored churches in Michigan, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Ohio during more than 50 years of ministry. She played piano, sang, taught Sunday school and ladies’ groups, counseled, provided meals and cared for people in many ways. She was an encourager and a friend to many.
Dorothy worked outside the home in various types of employment. She worked in credit unions and owned the Caldwell (Ohio) Credit Bureau for several years. She served as president of the Ohio Association of Regular Baptist Churches Women’s Association. Dorothy attended Maranatha Bible Church.
The family thanks the caring staff at Beckett House at New Concord, Genesis Hospice and Good Samaritan Hospital.
