Area Teams Gear Up for Tournaments as Season WInds Down
High School Boys Basketball:
Marietta 67 Zanesville 69 2/OT
Zanesville head coach Scott Aronhalt has been fond of the word, "resilient" to describe his team this season. The Blue Devils lived up to the true meaning of that word in their final game of the regular season on Senior Night at Winland Memorial Gymnasium.
While it wasn’t the prettiest game by any stretch of the imagination, especially on the defensive end, but Zanesville found a way (again) to get a victory. Senior Kade Haddox tied the game at the end of regulation, taking a missed Marietta free throw the length of the floor to tie the game at 51. Haddox had 19 in his final contest at Winland. With Christian Myers aggrivating an ankle injury late in the first half, the Blue Devils leaned on their youth, as sophomore guards Dar Stanford and Thomas Wibbeler both had 11 points in the victory. Jake Phillis saved his best play for the overtime periods, scoring ten of his 15 points in the extra two frames, including the winning shot that put Zanesville up for good.
Marietta had a chance after the Blue Devils took a late lead in double overtime, but a half court heave from the Tigers’ Tim Grosel just rattled out, breaking the hearts of the Tiger faithful instead of the home Blue Devil crowd.
With the win, Zanesville finishes their regular seasonwith a 15-5 record, winning 75 percent of their regular season games, after losing 73 percent of their scoring from a season ago. Zanesville will open the tournament a week from tonight against St. Charles at Marysville High School
