Update: Fatal Shooting In Zanesville

Police are releasing new information regarding a fatal shooting in Zanesville this weekend.

Captain Tony Coury said the victim is identified as 37-year-old Larry Lewis of Zanesville.  On Sunday night officers were called to 409 1/2 Mead Street, where they found Lewis bleeding on a porch.  Coury said the victim suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest, and he died at Good Samaritan Hospital.

"The police department has had a history with Mr. Lewis," said Coury.  "He was a victim several years ago at a bar on W Main Street, where he was shot multiple times at that location."

Coury said detectives are still interviewing witnesses to establish a motive, but a small amount of drugs was found at the scene of the shooting.  He said since January 2011, two homicides and two attempted homicides have occurred in Zanesville.

"We have seen a spike in shootings and shots fired," said Coury.  "People are being shot, particularly in our lower income areas on the south end of Zanesville.  We have also seen a spike in home invasions, and it seems like recently we’ve just had a lot of people being shot."

Anyone with information on Sunday’s shooting is asked to call the Zanesville Police Department at (740) 455-0700.
