A Church In Philo Honors Their Veterans

St. John’s Lutheran Church in Philo honored their local Veterans this morning.

The Veteran’s were recognized during the church service this morning followed by a homemade lunch where Veterans were able to talk about personal experiences. Commander from the Philo-Duncan Falls VFW, Jack Drake explained one of his favorite things about being a Veteran.

"I got a letter from a little girl over at John Glenn school, and she asked me a lot of questions about being a veteran and I told her, I said well, the best part about being a veteran is that this country is still free where she can continue on to do what she wants to do and have a life of her own. I told her to reach high for whatever she wants because it’s within reach and that’s one of the best things about being a veteran. 28:39"

Senior Vice Commander at the Philo-Duncan Falls VFW, Ron Gottke says he values the friendships he’s made from serving in the navy.

"I hooked up with a high school friend of mine, he joined the air force a week after i joined the navy. He retired air force, Dale Cleveland out of Roseville, and we got together for the second time in 42 years."

Gottke says that Veterans Day not only honors veterans, but shows how Veterans can help the community and how the community returns the favor.
