Alato Trio Travels to Various Elementary Schools

Elementary students in four counties learn about classical music through listening to a concert.

The Southeastern Ohio Symphony Orchestra’s Alato Trio traveled to schools in Noble, Coshocton, Guernsey and Muskingum Counties. Along the way, violinist Laura Schumann, said they’re playing for around 3,000 students. She said it’s thrill to see the students get excited for classical music.

“It’s extremely rewarding, and it’s a lot of fun,” Schumann said. “We could just and play a piece of music and another piece of music, but what we do we put it into a story and make it enjoyable, and like I say, it carries a message of teamwork. So we’re putting in even extra musical ideas to that.”

Schumann said besides just giving the kids something fun to listen to, the trio uses the concert as a teaching tool.

“We bring this great story about teamwork to kids, but it also teaches them about music and about how much fun music can be and all those things that are about that,” Schumann said. “It gets them a little bit more familiar with less familiar instruments like the violin or bassoon.”

Before the concerts, students learned about the different instruments used. The Southeastern Ohio Symphony Orchestra performs the concerts free of charge to the schools.
