Alzheimer’s Association to Host Key Events in Muskingum County

Alzheimers Help

ZANESVILLE, OH – The Alzheimer’s Association Central Ohio Chapter is hosting free in-person events in April to assist those affected by Alzheimer’s.

An event focusing on “Effective Communication Strategies” is set for April 19th at 4 PM, taking place at the John McIntire Library in Zanesville. This program is designed to explore the complexities of communication and aims to improve how families communicate with loved ones affected by Alzheimer’s.

“Often times, communication can be one of the biggest challenges in working with your loved one that has dementia. Communication is often one of the first things that people notice. People have difficulty communicating the way they used to. We help people learn different strategies and ways to deal with that.” Senior Director of Programs in the Central and Northwest Ohio Chapters of the Alzheimer’s Association, Pam Myers said.

The Alzheimer’s Association extends its support through caregiver support groups. These monthly meetings, held at the Muskingum County Center for Seniors at 1 PM, on the second Tuesday of every month, serve as a gathering for caregivers to share experiences, advice, and emotional support to navigate the challenges of caregiving.

“Our 2024 Facts and Figures report just came out and we know that there are almost 7 million people in the United States living with dementia. We also know that next year, we’re going to see about 250,000 Ohioans living with dementia. As the cases continue to rise, we’re going to see more folks that are living with the disease. Most folks living with the disease live at home with the caregivers. We want to make sure that people who are taking care of folks with dementia, family members, and the general public are equip with good skills.” Myers said.

Registration is encouraged for these events, but walk-ins are welcome. To register or more information, individuals are encouraged to call the Alzheimer’s Association Helpline at 800.272.3900.
