MUSKINGUM COUNTY, Ohio- Keeping a healthy heart should be top priority for all human beings.

American Heart Month takes place for the month of February and according to, Invasive Cardiologist, Dr. Mahmoud Farhoud, heart disease is the number cause of death in the United States. 

The Genesis Heart and Vascular department has been taking their part in this month by advising the community on what they can do to keep a healthy heart.

“We always talk about high fat foods that are usually not the best. In general, usually red meat or fatty foods, which are not the best for the heart that increases cholesterol in the blood,” Dr. Farhoud stated. “And high sugar foods or food with a big component of carbohydrate like any sweets in general. For example, donuts or cakes are usually not best for the heart.”

Dr. Farhoud said that he’s always suggesting to his patients to adopting a healthier lifestyle with common foods like vegetables, fruits, greens, low carbohydrate and low fat diets.

He provides signs of heart disease and what people should look out for.

“So the most common symptom of heart disease is chest pain and usually it’s more common on the left side, sometime in the middle of the  chest. That type of chest pain will get worse when you do activities or exercise and you’ll usually get better when you rest. Sometimes associated with nausea, sometimes vomiting. The other common symptom is usually shortness of breath. Especially when you do activities, if you get more shortness of breath that can be at this rate the heart,” Dr. Farhoud said. “Other symptoms are usually palpitation or fast heart rate, sometimes dizziness or passing out and sometimes lower extremity, which means swelling in the legs, it could be related to heart disease or heart failure when the heart function is not pumping well.”

Preventive medicine and monitoring your blood pressure is the first step in acknowledging and building a healthy heart.
