American Heritage Girls learn about Firearm Safety
The American Heritage Girls took to the shooting range today.
88 girls came together for a morning of firearm safety at the Dillon Sportsman Center. The ‘Bullets and Braids’ event included shooting various guns and bows and arrows. The girls also learned techniques in trapping and fishing. Troop Coordinator Rochelle Andrews said it’s important to teach youth about firearms now so they can feel confident with gun safety in the future.
“This also teaches them how to use a firearm safety and what to do if they find a firearm or they find ammunition lying around… so it gives a better, more confidence and more capability in what to do and how to do things correctly,” said Andrews.
The young ladies weren’t alone in their training, dads tagged along to offer help and support. Andrews said the event was also about strengthening the bond between father and daughter.
“One of the other things about this event is that it does promote the dad and daughter or father figure and their daughter,”said Andrews. “It gives them a good time together. It helps to promote some unity and it helps the dads to be confident in teaching their daughters how to use firearms correctly as well. ”
The girls between ages five and 16 participated and they left with knowledge of firearm safety and some tips for surviving in the great outdoors. The Dillon Sportsman Center looks forward to its next youth shooting event in September.
