Annual Chalk on the Walk

NEW CONCORD, Ohio- While many kids slept in on this Saturday morning, several students from East Muskingum County went to school instead to cover the sidewalk with chalk.
The East Muskingum County Endowment Fund held the 28th Annual Chalk on the Walk at Larry Miller Intermediate School. Chalk on the walk gives students from kindergarten to eighth grade a chance to let their creative juices flow and explore the arts. East Muskingum Schools Superintendent, Jill Sheridan, says art education is important to the district.
“At East Muskingum Schools we value the arts and this is one of the ways that we can celebrate, encourage our students to develop their visual arts.”
The students are given 45 minutes to draw their original piece of work before local judges pick their favorite designs.
“They use…they must use their original artwork and their art designs. They’ve been working with their art teachers throughout the last couple of weeks to design and develop those original ideas.”
Some of the artwork was patriotic. Some were the students favorite cartoons. Some are ready for Halloween and drew designs fit for the holiday. First grader Natalie Terrell had a lot of fun drawing her picture in anticipation of Halloween.
“I’m drawing a witch, and a pumpkin, and a ghost.”
In addition to the drawings, PanJGea performed during the judging period. The judges awarded first and second prizes to one student in each grade group. All students received a participation ribbon.
