ZANESVILLE, Ohio- Middle school girls from around Muskingum County kicked off their summer with the S.T.A.R.S. Summer Camp.

The day camp was located at the Ohio University Zanesville/Zane State College campus and hosted over 60 girls in 6th, 7th and 8th grade from all around the county.

“When we think back to middle school, it’s a hard age. This kind of gives them the opportunity of a safe, comfortable place to come and talk about all their girl stuff. How they’re changing and how they’re handling life and friendship and bullying,” said Ronelle Barnett, camp coordinator. “So I think this just gives them a safe, good place to do it with people who can educate them as they need to.”

One of the programs main goals is to have each girl leave the three day camp with a greater sense of self-confidence.

One camp-goer said that since being involved in the S.T.A.R.S. program she has become more comfortable with public speaking in the classroom.

“In school I can’t ever answer questions, so if a teacher ever calls on me i’m all shy. But since stars camp i’m starting to get better I can answer questions without freaking out,” said Kalynn Morgan who attends Tri-Valley Middle School.

Among the many different activities, the girls have public speaking, healthy cooking and even DIY makeup classes.

The event was made possible by many sponsors and community volunteers, allowing the camp to only cost $15 per girl for all three days.
