Aubri Spicer Is Doing More Than Breaking Records

Zanesville, OH-
New Lexington, Ohio, where the New Lexington High School Panthers girls basketball team plays, which now has a new all-time leading scorer in Aubri Spicer. With over 1,500 points in her time as a Panther, Spicer told us what it means to be able to achieve this accomplishment.
“It’s definitely an honor to be able to surpass Ann Mooney. She did great things for New Lexington. To be able to pass her is a big deal, and it’s very special to me. It wouldn’t have happened without my coaches and teammates.”
She spends a lot of time working on her ability to score the basketball.
“It all starts with time out of practice. I mean, you work on those things during practice, but I get reps with my grandpa a ton in the gym. He’s the assistant coach,” Spicer stated.
Aubri can score, no problem, but in her senior year, she has developed other skills on the court.
“I feel like my defense has picked up this year. My freshman year was not the greatest and I feel like I have worked on that a ton. I have learned how to play good defense without fouling,” Spicer said.
These new skills have helped her lead this team and her coach, Jay Chadwell, told us about those changes.
“She’s really become a smart basketball player which will help her at the next level. She is going to Findlay next year. The skills come when you work at it, and she definitely works at it. The way she is able to see the game has really improved.”
It’s her final year on the team but the connections with her teammates will last forever.
“It’s a great group of girls and I love all of these girls. They all mean a ton to me and I would have not been able to beat the record without them. We’re super close, so it’s gonna be sad but we’re not done yet,” Spicer said.
Aubri Spicer may hold the all-time record for scoring, but her impact on the future of the New Lexington girls basketball program will set her apart.
“A lot of little girls want to play basketball now because of who she is and what she has done. She takes time to talk to them and take pictures or sign autographs and whatever she has to do. She really does care about the impact that she has,” Chadwell stated.
The Panthers are one win away from winning the 2023 Small School MVL Title.
