Barbara Powell

Barbara Alice Powell, 91, of Zanesville, died Saturday afternoon, August 1, 2026, at the Oaks at Northpointe.

Born April 2, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York, she was a daughter of the late Charles John and Mildred (George) Wintjen and a 1952 graduate of Lash High School. Barbara was a member of the Dresden United Methodist Church. She started as a nurse’s aide at Bethesda, then became a surgical technician working mainly in OB. She loved helping to deliver babies and was especially proud of the fact that she assisted with the births of all her grandchildren. Prior to her work at the hospital, she was a certified Red Cross swimming instructor. She traveled and taught lessons all over Muskingum County, taking great pride in helping people of all ages learn how to swim.

Surviving is her three children, Chuck (Paula) Powell of Nashport; Pam (Larry) Hogue of Adamsville and Patti (Rick) Knicely of Adamsville; seven grandchildren, Ryan (Amber) Hogue, Eric (Shannah) Hogue, Alan (Lauren) Hogue, Brianne Powell, Alison Powell, Dakota (Hannah) Knicely, and Morgan (Liz) Knicely; fourteen great grandchildren, Erin & Alex, Megan & Tim, Camryn, Cadyn & Kingstyn, Caleb & Eden, Wyatt & Ellianna, Calvin, Carver & Kendall; a brother-in-law, Dan Coole and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Leon Powell, who she married on June 10, 1953, and he died, June 2, 2017; and her sister, Ruth Coole.

Family and friends may visit 11:00- 1:00pm, Friday, August 7, 2026, at the Dresden Chapel of Vensil | Wagner | Marshall Funeral Home, 714 Main Street.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm, Friday, August 7, 2026, with Pastor Geoff Geyer officiating.

Barbara will be laid to rest next to her husband, Hubert Leon Powell at Dresden Cemetery.
