BBB Warns of Post-Storm Scams

ZANESVILLE, OH – After severe storms, scammers often move in as quickly as the damage. The Better Business Bureau is warning homeowners to stay alert before hiring contractors.
Storm chasers may show up offering quick repairs or free roof inspections. Experts say some lack proper licensing, make big promises they can’t keep, or even create damage to secure work.
“With storm damage, we call them ‘Storm chasers.’ They often times will show up at your door, and they will create a sense of urgency that you have to take advantage of their offer immediately. They’ll either say there is something significantly wrong with your roof or your basement and that you need to take advantage of it or you’re going to have significantly more damage if you don’t rectify it immediately.” BBB Central/Southeastern Ohio President and CEO, Judy Dollison said.
Many scams begin with unsolicited door-to-door offers or calls claiming work is already happening nearby. In some cases, dishonest inspectors may exaggerate or fabricate damage to pressure homeowners into costly repairs. Before hiring a contractor, the BBB recommends contacting your insurance company first, getting multiple estimates, and researching each business.
“The best advice whenever you’re confronted with a situation like this is not to make a decision right away. Slow down and do some research. Look into the contractor that approached you or get on BBB.org and do some research about good contractors in your area that might be able to do the work. We always say you want at least three estimates before you make a decision.” Dollison said.
The BBB also recommends checking business ratings on the BBB website and paying with a credit card for added protection.
