Bernard ” Bernie” Baldwin

Zanesville—Bernard (Bernie) Leroy Baldwin, 90, of Zanesville, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, May 31, 2025. Born on February 8, 1935, in Muskingum County, Ohio, he was the beloved son of the late Bernard O. and Freda (Culbertson) Baldwin.
Bernie shared 60 wonderful years of marriage with his wife, Betty Baldwin, whom he wed on October 31, 1957. Together, they built a loving family, including their four children: Steven (Lynn) Baldwin, Craig (Teresa) Baldwin, Terri (Lew) Sidwell, and Julie (Phil) MacLaine. He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren—Ben (Lyndsee) Baldwin, Jennifer (Jason) Douthat, Katie (Dave) Brown, Karen (Jared) Cox, Kori Sidwell, Kasey (Will) Lenhart, and Ally (Chase) Himmelspach—as well as five great-grandchildren: Gabe and Gracie Brown, Jase Lenhart, Piper Himmelspach, and Andrew Douthat.
Bernie is also survived by his brother-in-law, Gene Dalrymple, and sister-in-law, Peg Law, along with several nieces and nephews. He held a special place in his heart for his dear friend, Jeannette Muse. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betty, his sister Bernice McDonald, and his lifelong friends Bill and Kay Stuck.
A dedicated builder and estimator, Bernie played an instrumental role in constructing local schools and hospitals during his tenure at the Paul Contracting Company. In 1983, he established Baldwin Construction Company alongside his son Craig, leaving a lasting imprint on the industry. He was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge, Elks Lodge, and a longtime supporter of the West Muskingum Athletic Boosters. He was a member of Trinity United Presbyterian Church and served as an Elder for many years. Bernie also gave back to his community as a member of the Falls Township Board of Zoning Appeals.
A passionate athlete, Bernie excelled in golf and fast-pitch softball, playing well into his 40s for several local teams, including Presto Grill, Goss Supply Co., Bings Furniture, RJ Drilling, and Derby Oil and Gas. A past member of the Zanesville Country Club, he cherished time on the golf course. His love for sports extended beyond his own participation—he avidly supported his children’s and grandchildren’s athletics. Whether serving on the West Muskingum Chain Gang with his dear friend Bill Stuck or sporting a cap for every school his grandchildren attended—Maysville, Rosecrans, and West Muskingum—Bernie was always their biggest fan.
Bernie will be deeply missed by his family and friends. His legacy of hard work, kindness, and unwavering support will live on in the many lives he touched. The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the physicians and staff of Genesis Health Care System, Genesis Hospice, and Home Instead for their compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Genesis Healthcare Foundation.
