Bernard “Joe” Harkness (June 28, 1938 – November 1, 2011)

Bernard J. “Joe†Harkness, 73, of Virginia Beach, VA, died at 8:41 am Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, VA.
Born June 28, 1938, in Zanesville, Ohio, he was the son of the late Charles Hanley and Leva Mayno Harkness. He is a Veteran of the United States Navy with 22 years of service, retiring as chief aircraft mechanic in 1976 and then retired from Marine Hydraulics Inc as hydraulic technician in1996.
Joe, Uncle Barney, Pop and Pawpaw are just a few names he was lovingly known by. He loved working on mechanical things. He was a great fan of little league softball, even coached with his son at times. Joe was also a huge follower of Ohio State sports teams, but what gave him the greatest joy was spending time with family.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 43 years, Barbara Ann Herren Harkness in 2004.
Survivors include his sons: Ronald M Harkness of South Bloomfield, OH, Terrance A Harkness (Terry Martin) and Bryan D Harkness of Virginia Beach, VA, grandchildren: Candice and her husband Rick Procter, Kyle and Kayla Harkness of South Bloomfield and Travis Harkness of Virginia Beach, VA, great grandchildren: Rylynne and Charles Joe Procter of South Bloomfield, OH brothers: Tom Harkness of Az, Charles “Rick†(Cathy) Harkness of Fultonham, OH, David Harkness of Pa., sisters: Karen Bellows of Grove City, OH, Georgiana Burtnett, Frances (Jerry) Grundy and Charlotte (Dan) Snider all of Zanesville, OH, brothers-in-law: Don Herren of Fl. and David Herren of Columbus, OH, sister-in-law: Janice (John) Buck of Columbus, OH, numerous nieces and nephews, Patti Breeden, who Joe thought of as a daughter, her children Kristi, Brent and Kandi and Patti’s grandchildren.
Friends may call 12:00 Noon till time of service at 2:00 PM Saturday November 5, 2011, officiated by Pastor Howard Thompson, at Bryan & Snider Funeral Home 2318 Maple Ave Zanesville, OH, followed by full military services. Honoring Joe’s wishes a caring cremation will follow.
