Bridge Used by Buses Closed

A local bridge is closed until spring after officials with the Muskingum County engineer’s office discover it’s deteriorating.

Buses from the Maysville School District travel on the bridge located on green house road daily. The engineer’s office found the damage after comparing photos and measurements from last year.

"This is part of our annual bridge inspection. We noticed some discrepancies with the bridge from last year into this year. This existing bridge sits on a sandstone abutment foundation and we noticed that the age of the sandstone are starting to deteriorate" said Doug Davis, Community Engineer.

Weather and vehicle vibration are the main reasons for the damage. The problem cannot be fixed in freezing conditions. If the bridge was not closed off more problems could occur.

"The sand stone could crumble and then naturally they don’t support the structure and the bridge can settle" said Davis.

If that happens the bridge becomes more dangerous and the cost to fix it sky rockets.
