Brockelbank settles into role as Muskingum AD

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – There have been a lot of changes in the Muskingum athletic department recently and it started at the top.

The University announced earlier this year that Athletic Director Larry Shank was retiring after serving as AD since 2001. That left a void that was filled by Steve Brockelbank who accepted the position of AD in January. His first day on the job was April 1.

Brockelbank comes from an extensive background in college athletics both as a coach and administrator. He said that he’s excited to take over Muskingum’s 21 varsity sports.

“I want our students to compete in everything they do. I want them to strive for competitive excellence whether it be in the classroom, or on the field, or on the court. We want our kids to reach their potential and go beyond. And I think the result of that is that we’ll have a lot success,” said Brockelbank.

The new Muskingum AD comes to New Concord via the DI ranks. He wore many hats while working for Miami Univeristy’s athletic department. Prior to that he was an assistant football coach at DII Grand Valley State University where he helped take the Lakers to two national titles.

Brockelbank has only been on campus for about two weeks but said that former athletic director Larry Shank has been instrumental in helping him learn about his new role.

“Larry has been excellent. I’ve sat down with Larry numerous times. Had some conversations with him. I’m going to use him as a resources. He’s been here a long time. He knows the history. He’s been extremely helpful and I’ll keep seeking out his assistance,” said Brockelbank.
