Cambridge Experiences Series of Fires

ZANESVILLE, Ohio- The Cambridge Fire Dept. is investigating several fires this week– one of which claimed the life of a local man.

67-year old Curtis Deberry was identified as the victim in the first story of his Dunning Lane home shortly before 10 A.M. on Tuesday morning. Cambridge Fire Chief Jeff Deeks says all on-duty fighters responded to the scene Monday evening within 5-minutes of the initial call. The remaining department members all reported as well, but Deeks had to wait until Tuesday morning to safely investigate the home.

“Upon arrival, the structure was fully involved. The department took defensive action against it until we could get it safe enough to get in there, but because of the way the deterioration conditions happened we had to pull the guys out and continue the search in the morning when it got daylight and make everyone safer,” said Chief Deeks.

The fire at Dunning Lane isn’t the only incident that Chief Deeks and his department have had to respond to in recent days. Last night a fire began on N. 5th St. that engulfed one home, and spread to the adjacent house causing damage to it as well.

“This is our fourth fire in the past four nights, so it’s been a pretty busy time for us. They’re tired right now, so we’re working with them to make sure we meet their needs and hopefully give them a rest for a little bit,” he added.

Chief Deeks has reminded homeowners to exercise caution during grass fire season, and thanked community members and local area volunteer departments for their support as well.
