Celebrating Developmental Disabilities Month

The month of March is Developmental Disabilities month. It began in 1987 with a proclamation from President Regan to help bring public awareness people of all abilities.
In honor of the event an annual basketball game took place between the Muskingum Special Olympics Team and the Muskingum County Board of Developmental Disabilities staff.
It’s something that everyone looks forward to each year. It also encourages inclusion and community.
“It’s to bring awareness that there are so many people in our community that have developmental disabilities and they are just as capable as anyone else in the community as living in the community, working in the community just being apart of our community. We want to make sure their included in as many ways as we can,” said Jenna Conaway from the Muskingum County Board of DD.
The local board of developmental disabilities provides many different services.
“We serve everyone throughout the course of their lifetime. We provide educational services, we have employment services, getting folks out in the community is always very important to us,” said Conaway.
