Children Develop Science Skills through Library Program

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Area children enjoyed an afternoon of fun with
science at the John McIntire Library—located in downtown
Zanesville. The library held its Hot Wheels Science Challenge program
this afternoon, in which children were provided with various
materials to construct tracks for toy cars. Sean Fennell, with the
Muskingum County Library System, says science played a key role in
the program.
“So, today is our
Hot Wheels Science Challenge and it is a fantastic way for us to
introduce some younger kiddos to ideas about science and physics; so
we’re looking at—you know—force, and motion. We have some
really great resources set up for them as well. But, they get to play
but also learn about science so it’s just a really fun way to
engage some kids with science.”
Children were able
to work together to build their own experimental tracks from old
gutters, foam blocks, Lego Blocks, and various plastics.
“We have some
pre-built tracks, but we also have utilized gutters—just the kind
of gutters on the side of your house—that we have made into tracks.
And so, what it allows the kids to do is build and experiment with
different types of surfaces to see what works—and what inclines and
declines work and how they can get those cars to do what they want
them to do. They’re having a lot of fun.”
In other news from
the Muskingum County Library System, the After School Snack Program
will begin on Monday at the John McIntire Library and Roseville
branches. Cost free food will be provided for all children in
attendance from 4 to 4:30 PM through January 17.
