City To Start Leaf Collection

City Hall

ZANESVILLE, Ohio-The city of Zanesville is beginning it’s leaf collection cycle beginning in late October.

The cycle is meant to provide a service to Zanesville residents looking to clear their yards of leaves and keep storm sewers from overflowing. Mayor Don Mason says what to expect and when to expect it.

“Starting on October 26th, following a cycle, for three straight weeks at a minimum, we will be vacuuming out the leaves. Now the reason I say three weeks at a minimum is you can’t rake the leaves till they fall off, and there are times of the year where the leaves stay on clear through mid until late November, so we will continue vacuuming leaves as long as the leaves keep falling down.”

The city wants leaves to be left in piles on the yard side of the curbs. Mason says it’s better for the city to dispose of leaves than normal citizens.

“There used to be a theory that put them in the trash and put them in a landfill, but frankly using a landfill space is very expensive for something that decays the way leaves do. So it’s better for the city to collect them and dispose of them in more eco-friendly methods.”
