County Commissioners Discuss New Hazmat Truck

Muskingum County EMA also Urges Caution as Severe Storms hit our Area

ZANESVILLE, OH – The Muskingum County Commissioners met with the Muskingum County Emergency Management Agency to discuss the purchase of a Hazmat Truck.

Jeff Jadwin, the EMA Director, said Muskingum County was gifted with a hazmat decontamination trailer from the Mifflin Township Fire Department.

Jadwin said while this piece of equipment could be great for decontaminating multiple people at once, it’s also a very heavy piece of equipment.

“It’s a gooseneck trailer and it takes a special truck, so they didn’t want to buy a new truck for something that might get used once or twice a year versus sitting most of the time,” Jadwin said. “So I went out and found a used chassis and so I gave them the price of the chassis and the box would cost. I’m only asking them to pick up the cost of the chassis, I can cover the bed.”

The decision to purchase the hazmat truck is currently under advisement.

Jadwin also wanted to take the time to make sure Muskingum County residents are prepared for severe storms and possible flooding.

He said the most important thing you can do is prepare a go bag for each person in your family with at least 1 gallon of water per person, necessary medication, and batteries for flashlights.

“We try to preach to everybody that they need to have their reverse 911 that the county pays for,” Jadwin said. “Most people don’t have a home phone, so you’re not going to get the reverse 911 calls unless you sign up for our system, you can put your cell phone in, you can put your home phone, you can put your emails. You can put multiple locations, it can be done on the EMA’s website, on the county’s website, there’s a banner that goes with that, or you can call the office and we’ll put the information in for you.”

Jadwin also recommends signing up for Weather Alert App so you can get real time updates.

You can download the WHIZ Weather from the Apple App Store as well as the Google Play Store so you can know exactly what’s happening outdoors.
