County Officials Address Solid Waste Concerns in Muskingum County

ZANESVILLE, Ohio — The Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department met with the county commissioners to address solid waste concerns in local neighborhoods.
The meeting gave the public health department a chance to raise concerns about ongoing solid waste issues throughout Muskingum County. Officials also reviewed local health codes to ensure they’re able to enforce public safety regulations as effectively as possible.
“We were just talking about different strategies we could come up with to collaborate with other agencies to help deal with the various solid waste issues that we have throughout the county,” ZMCHD Environnmental Health Director Adam Dickerson said. “We have properties that have trash laying outside…obviously we don’t want that so we’re just finding ways to effectively deal with it.”
A common misconception is that public health strictly focuses on medical care. In reality, it covers a wide range of issues, including environmental concerns like solid waste.
“We also have environmental health so from the environmental health perspective, solid waste creates harborage for rodents and different dangers, mosquitoes, things that can affect people’s health,” Dickerson said.
By working across agencies, the department hopes to find more effective solutions to keep communities clean and healthy.
