CROOKSVILLE, Ohio- This week is fire prevention week across Ohio and many fire departments are educating their citizens on how to be safe.

Today the Crooksville Fire Department held an open house for the community to learn about fire safety. The department gave rides in the fire trucks, let kids touch and feel the equipment, and had pamphlets with fire safety checklists. Kimberly Wolford a Crooksville EMT says this is a great time to think about fire prevention.

“Winter is the most dangerous time for fires for houses. So check your smoke detectors. Make sure you have a plan and know your way out of your house. And make sure the kids know too.”

The department wants the community to know that they’re available to help if needed. If you aren’t sure if your smoke detectors work or how to check them, you can ask a firefighter. They can also answer other fire questions you may have.

“We can…go into the house and check the fire detectors. Also, if you want to have a bonfire or something within the village premises you have to have a burn permit. So our firefighters will go out and inspect the site, let you know about the burn policies and procedures.”

In addition to making sure your smoke detectors work the fire department encourages everyone to install carbon monoxide detectors. They also say you should have two exit plans and a family meeting point should a fire occur.
