CROP Hunger Walk Hopes to Stomp Out Hunger
Across the nation Sunday, people are walking to stomp out hunger.
Zanesville’s local CROP Hunger Walk, which stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty, kicked off this afternoon at the Zanes Landing Park. Organizers are hoping to raise around 16,000 dollars, 25% of the money will remain locally and be split between the Salvation Army and Christ Table. The rest will be used internationally by Church World Services. Organizers say the Zanesville community is very supportive.
"I have been here since 1976 and it is a very generous community and we look out for each other and our most poverty strickent here are wealthy compared to the 3rd world countries,"says co-cordinator Gwen Mendenhall.
Church World Services provides disaster relief and helps create sustainable projects throughout the world. The young and the old came out Sunday to fight hunger. Even 90-year-old Fred Taylor of Mount Perry is walking as far as his legs will take him.
"First in 90 years, I have done a lot of walking in those 90 years, but never anything like this," laughs Taylor.
Taylor says it is a wonderful thing to help another person. CROP will continue to take donations at the First Christian Church until the end of the month. All donations are tax-deductible and checks should be made out to Church World Services.
