Dailey Down, But Not Out

There is still no clear cut winner in the Republican primary in the 18th congressional district.

Earlier this week vote leader Bob Gibbs declared himself the winner.

His closest opponent, Fred Dailey, is just 164 votes behind. And he says don’t count him out just yet.

"I think it’s a little presumptuous," said Dailey. "I think we should wait until the fat lady sings and so far she hasn’t even found her sheet music yet. I think we just need to wait and see what’s going to happen. If he’s the winner at the end of the day, I’ll certainly congratulate him."

The local election boards are still counting in all 16 counties. Dailey says he expects the process to continue through next week to figure out just who is the winner in this close race.

"There were eight candidates in the race, which fractured the vote," said Dailey. "It looks like the winner is going to win with about 21% of the vote, which is a pretty small amount of the vote that was cast. Even then, only one out of five people who were eligible to vote, voted."

Dailey says if he is still within one half of a percent, there will be a recount.

That recount will not be a retabulation of each and every vote, but a sampling of five-percent of the votes in the district.
