Dive Into Swim Safety with Swimming Safety Tips

ZANESVILLE, OH – As summer heats up and families flock to their favorite swimming spots, it’s time to make a splash and dive into swim safety.

Whether you’re planning a day at the beach, a dip in the pool, or a swim at the lake, swim safety is essential for a fun and worry-free experience. With drowning being the second leading cause of death for children ages five to 14, ensuring your child’s safety in the water should be a top priority. One of the best ways to keep your little ones safe while they play is by enrolling them in swim lessons.

“That populates out to be about two drownings per day in the United States. We have over 4,000 deaths annually due to drownings. The YMCA really focuses on injury and drowning prevention by providing swim lessons on a regular basis. We offer them monthly throughout the year,” YMCA Aquatics Director Libby Hardwick said.

When planning a swimming outing, it’s a good idea to prioritize locations with lifeguard services as they can help prevent accidents. While lifeguards are essential, it’s still important for parents to remain attentive and actively watch their children when they are in or near the water.

“Nine times out of ten, with drownings, the parents are very close, within ten feet of the child and not paying attention to what’s going on around them and their surroundings. It’s very important that there’s a certified lifeguard on duty where any swimming activities are taking place,” Hardwick said.
